PUPUSAS THE MOST POPULAR DISH FROM EL SALVADOR

La pupusa is a handmade tortilla
made of corn or rice dough, which is filled with one or more ingredients, such
as cheese, loroco, beans, pork rinds, pumpkin, which are the most popular
combinations ans also can be accompanied with tomato sauce and sauerket. In
addition, la pupusa is one of the main typical dishes of El Salvador. For
Salvadorans, la pupusa is not only a delicious dish, but an indisputable piece
of cultural identity. Moreover, it has been maintained by the tradition
inherited from generation to generation, and this dish has even crossed borders
and conquered palates around the world.
El Salvador is the country where
pupusas are most consumed and exported; undoubtedly, the Salvadoran version is
the most popular among tourists. Despite being a shared dish with many variations
in its preparation and ingredients, they have a special place in El Salvador.
It has by Legislative Decree its National Day, which is celebrated on the
second Sunday of November. Also, El Salvador holds the record for the largest
pupusa, registered in the Guinness Book of Records.
The origin of pupusa is not
entirely clear, according to some historians, it cannot be said that pupusa
originated in a specific country, but in the Mesoamerican region. In fact,
similar dishes have been known in the Mayan and Pipil civilizations in the
Mesoamerican region. La pupusa is one of the characteristic and unmistakable
dishes of the Central American region.
